What is INTAMSYS PEI 9085, and why is it used in 3D printing?
PEI 9085 (often referred to as ULTEM 9085) is a high-performance thermoplastic from the polyetherimide (PEI) family. It is valued in additive manufacturing for its exceptional flame retardancy, high strength-to-weight ratio, chemical resistance, and thermal stability. These properties make it an excellent material for aerospace, automotive, and defense applications where safety and compliance are critical.
What industries typically use INTAMSYS PEI 9085 parts?
PEI 9085 is widely adopted in aerospace, automotive, mass transit, and defense because it meets stringent FST (flame, smoke, and toxicity) requirements and holds regulatory approvals (such as FAR 25.853 for aerospace interiors). It’s also used for functional prototypes, jigs, fixtures, and low-volume end-use production parts.
What are the key advantages of INTAMSYS PEI 9085 compared to other engineering filaments?
High heat resistance (continuous use up to ~150 °C)
Flame-retardant & FST-certified (safe for cabin and transit use)
Excellent strength-to-weight ratio (strong but lightweight)
Outstanding chemical resistance (fuel, oils, cleaning agents)
Dimensional stability even under load and elevated temperatures
What equipment is needed to print with INTAMSYS PEI 9085?
PEI 9085 requires an industrial-grade high-temperature 3D printer. Typical requirements include:
Nozzle temp: 350–380 °C
Heated bed: ~120–160 °C
Heated chamber: ≥ 90 °C to prevent warping
Drying system: The filament must be dried before use to avoid moisture-induced defects. INTAMSYS printers such as the FUNMAT PRO 610 HT are specifically designed to handle these demanding conditions.
Is INTAMSYS PEI 9085 certified for use in safety-critical applications?
Yes. PEI 9085 is UL94 V-0 flame retardant and meets FAR 25.853 (flammability, smoke density, and toxicity) standards. These certifications make it one of the very few additive manufacturing materials suitable for flight-certified aerospace interiors and other highly regulated environments.
